Hollywood publicists (TV, Film) discuss "How to" manage social media good, bad and ugly

Social media took publicists by surprise, providing immense opportunities and significant challenges for many publicists, who are still trying to figure out how to measure its success. About 150 PR Pros (about two dozen sat on the floor, too) packed into the International Cinematographers Guild,Union Local 600 auditorium, Hollywood, CA. this month (10-21-11) to sort it all out.

The seven member panelist included Dawn Wilcox, Allison and Partners, Tracy St. Pierre, NBC, Beth Braen, NATPE, Andrew Stachler, Warner Bros., Jenny Connelly and Laurel Whitcomb from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

It was moderated by Rosalind Jarrett, the Screen Actors Guild Awards®.

Social Media brings more accountability, challenges and a lot more opportunities says EPPS panel of experts

One of the big concerns in social media is that business has only ad a small view of their social media marketing campaigns, and often have no clue of how something such as the rate of posting on Facebook might influence the amount money spent by first-time visitors. Or how retweets by an influential blogger might boost membership or awareness of a brand.

Panelist Dawn Wilcox told the crowd unlike a year ago, social media has brought more accountability. “It’s more challenging now, but it also now gives us the opportunity to be more strategic,” explained Wilcox.

And Todd Beck, president of Beck Media & Marketing, LA agrees. He says don’t ignore the negative comments, but be careful responding until you’ve had a change to analyze the motive or the reason for the posts. Sometimes he noted by taken the agitated visitor offline or send a direct email or twitter message you can diffuse the situation.

And Vice President Andrew Stachler of Interactive Marketing, Warner Bros. says WB despites cutbacks the motion picture studio is careful what they post, and recently put one person in charge of social media.

“Think of Facebook to be used marketing, and Twitter is a mini news releases,” Tracy St. Pierre told the EPPS crowd.

NBC’s Tracy St. Pierre has worked on everything from daytime, primetime and late night to specials and made for TV movies. She continues to oversee campaigns for “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Whitney” and the midseason drama “Awake.”

Additionally, she works with her PR, marketing and digital teams at NBC to create and implement social media events for the network.

Panelist Dawn Wilcox, GM, A and P noted that the Social Media has changed the demands for new hires at her firm and she noticed noticeable progress in technology difference just over the last year. She talsk about how Paris Hilton help sell more rooms in Vegas for the Hard Rock Cafe account.

The growth of social media community is important from likes and comments on Facebook to retweets and direct messages on Twitter or Google+, a large amount of user activity on your company website shows not only you can engage your audience off the website, but it also coverts those users on a path you have total control over – your website.

'Fathoms Deep' movie stars turn out for the film's premiere

The movie delivers on action, drama and comedy. Premiere spotlights the stars of the film at the Los Angeles Independent Theater, downtown

I have never been to the Los Angeles Independent Theater, which has been open for three years. Nice place for premieres, parties, and it even has the traditional snack bar with drink, nonalcoholic beverages and beer/wine. Inside it is a totally remodeled and modern architectual design. Big enough for parties, yet small enough for intimacy.

And tons of energy from the Producer, Director and Star Zachary Ryan Block (runs in the family. His brother had plenty of energy, too, to sell a stack of DVDs on hand, and with same ear to ear friendly smile.) From one interview to the next there is a lot of buzz and excitement about the film. I bumped into Actress Allison Mattox, who had plenty of energy, too.

The movie is a comical, yet thrilling look inside the life of two partners in crime, Hicks and Cash. They now have to wait out the storm while opposing crime boss Lou Garris has them hunted down. Will they make it out just in time? There are some violent scenes, but pretty dark humor, too. Not a good move for teens under 18..

In the aftermath of a deal gone bad, two partners in crime, Hicks (Zachary Block) and Cash (Robert Dill) are mere puppets in a twisted lineup of crime lords and "not quite so right in the head" villains. Amongst the haunting backdrop of the Mojave Desert, they now have to wait out the storm with a less than appealing safety man, Pox (Austin Galante of Bad Fathers) while an opposing crime boss Lou Garris (Duane Daniels) has them hunted down.

Will they make it out just in time, or is there even a way out? Fathom's Deep is a thrilling and often comical look into the life of unorganized crime and one things for sure. "There's no such thing as Good Guys." I give this movie two thumbs up and a must see of independent films. The military succeeds in transforming him into a human weapon, but quickly decide that their Super Soldier is far too expensive a creation to risk in combat.

morale by performing in USO shows for American troops. He is even given a costume that bear
the colors of Old Glory for the stage.

One of the most talked about superhero films gets the green light for a premiere in Hollywood Thursday and opens on this Friday. In New York the buzz is already starting to pick up with a scheduled midnight showing on tonight (Thursday) for the Green Lantern.

The movie is based on the DC comics character of the Green Lantern, and is one of WB's most promoted and early buzzed movie promises in 2011. The animation is spectacular and the storylines promises to keep Green Lantern comic book fans happy.

The first Green Lantern (Alan Scott) was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940).

Each Green Lantern possesses a power ring and power lantern that gives the user great control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

The ring is one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, and can be very dangerous. While the ring of the Golden Age Green Lantern (Alan Scott) was magically powered, the rings worn by all subsequent Lanterns were technological creations of the Guardians of the Universe, who granted such rings to worthy candidates. These individuals made up the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.

After World War II, when sales of superhero comic books generally declined, DC ceased publishing new adventures of Alan Scott as the Green Lantern.

Warner Bros. did the usual blocking off several blocks on Hollywood Blvd. at Mann's Chinese Theater location jamming traffic the whole day, so Green Lantern fans can snap photos of Martin Campbell and Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern cast and other celebrities who show up.

Many of the Green Lantern cast members were on the black and green celebrity carpet last night. The media lines to interview Martin Campbell and other stars
was a quarter mile long in front of Mann's Chinese Theater.

Secret location leaked for local 'Green Lantern' giveaway

According to Nola.com - Warner Bros.' "Join the Corps" promotional event will begin at 9 p.m. tonight (June 13) at Lafayette Square Park, with the Green Lantern Corps logo being projected prominently to mark the spot.

The first 100 people to show up will get free tickets to Tuesday's advance screening of the superhero film, which opens wide on Friday. Everyone who shows up will get a chance to win prizes including T-shirts, "Green Lantern" rings and "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" DVDs.

One of my favorite actresses cast in the Green Lantern is Angela Bassett. Among her many artistic accomplishments, Bassett was Oscar-nominated and won both the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical, and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture, for her star-making performance as Tina Turner/Anna Mae Bullock in 1993’s What's Love Got to Do with It. She won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work as the late-Dr. Betty Shabazz in Spike Lee's Malcolm X, (1982). She also received an Emmy nomination her lead role in the 2002 television feature, The Rosa Parks Story, for which she was Executive Producer.

Angela also served as Executive Producer on the films Our American and Bucket of Blood.

Angela Bassett has built her career around playing some of the most celebrated real-life, pioneering women of the twentieth century. U.S. Economic Recovery is Underway, Stronger Growth in ’12

In L.A. County, international trade, entertainment and tourism leads regional economy.

Los Angeles — The economic recovery is under way led by increased international trade and growth in the high-tech sector, entertainment and tourism, according to the 2011-2012 Economic Forecast and Industry Outlook report released today by the Kyser Center for Economic Research at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

The Los Angeles economy “appears to be past the bottom of the recession and is starting up the recovery path during 2011 and 2012,” said LAEDC Chief EconomistNancy D. Sidhu, Ph.D. “Many industries are back in the black and employment is rising in some areas.”

Imports and exports have rebounded around the world. Increased international trade activity in 2011 will benefit the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which both posted strong years in 2010.

Hiring is also expected to grow as well for the region’s tourism and entertainment sectors as a result of increased filming and more visitors to the region, helped by the new convention center hotel at L.A. LIVE.

TV/ film permits and production on the rise.

However, there is little likelihood the housing sector will escape another difficult year, even though 2011 is expected to bring some improvement. Housing activity will only see incremental improvement even though it has improved from the 2009 lows.

California, which had the second highest unemployment rate in the country in 2010 at 12.5 percent, will see employment growth in 2011. However, much like the national picture, California’s jobless rate will remain relatively high, with the LAEDC forecasting an average unemployment rate of 12.1 percent this year and the rate coming down to 11.5 percent by next year.

“We project that the California and U.S. economies will grow moderately in 2011 and 2012,” said Sidhu. “But the recession was so deep, 2011 won’t feel all that good despite improvements in most industries. However, the state is headed in the right direction, and the economy will seem even better by 2012.”

Growing Together report highlights L.A. County’s personal and economic ties with Japan

The LAEDC also released a separate, new report, “Growing Together – Japan and Los Angeles County”. The report describes many of the close ties that have developed between Los Angeles County and Japan, the number one source of foreign direct investment into L.A. County.

U.S. – Japan trade has increased dramatically over the past 50 years jumping from $3.2 billion to $211 billion at its peak in 2000. Japan is the second largest trading partner of the Los Angeles Customs District with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together handling nearly 25 percent of total trade between Japan and the U.S.

The report also documents the growing importance of foreign direct investment in this relationship, reviewing both investments made by Los Angeles area business firms in Japan and Japanese investments in Los Angeles County.

To discuss their investments made in the region, the LAEDC’s EconomicForecast event held at the Los Angeles Marriott on Feb. 16 features a panel of speakers from well-known Japanese companies. Representatives from Honda Motors, Union Bank and Yakult, makers of probiotic beverages, will discuss the significant impact of Japanese companies on the L.A. County economy.

Philbin is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most hours on television of anyone in the world. He has entertained generations as the host of the daily talk show “Live with Regis and Kelly,” and his career is now into its seventh decade. He started with “The Regis Philbin Show” in San Diego and soon moved to Los Angeles. His first national exposure came as the announcer for ABC’s nightly talk-variety program “The Joey Bishop Show.”

Philbin also was the original host of the blockbuster “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” game show. He is receiving the RTNA’s first-ever “Broadcast Legend Award” for his stature and excellence in broadcasting.

Philbin earlier announced this week on his nationally famous "Live With Regis And Kelly" show that he would be stepping down later this year.

KNX won the Golden Mike for "Best Radio Newscast Over 15 Minutes," while KFI won "Best Radio Newscast Under 15 Minutes" for major market stations.

KNBC was honored tonight with the awards for "Best Daytime" and "Best Half Hour" newscasts, while KTTV won the Golden Mike for "Best 60-Minute Newscast" at the 61st Annual Golden Mike Awards in Universal City.

KNBC-TV's longest running TV Anchor Kelly Lange, who started as a weather girl, and Sunday live talk show host was given a "Lifetime Achievement Award." She dished out plenty of stories over the decades at Channel 4 News, where explicatives were accidentally aired by such famous people at Tom Brokaw and others she worked with at the Peacock station in Burbank.

Kelly Lange was the first female weeknight television news anchor in Southern California. Her career started in 1967 as an airborne traffic reporter for KABC-AM radio. She joined KNBC-TV in 1971 where she spent 28 years.

Lange won numerous awards, including multiple Golden Mikes and Emmys. She became nationally known as a fill-in anchor on NBC’s “Today” and “Tomorrow” shows. She developed a second career as a novelist and has half-a-dozen books to her credit.

The Golden Mikes Awards for broadcast news excellence are presented annually by the RTNA, the non-profit group representing broadcast newsrooms in Los Angeles, San Diego, and all of the other markets from Bakersfield south to the Mexican border.

Longtime Los Angeles television anchors Kelly Lange, retired from KNBC and currently an author, and Jose A. Ronstadt, currently with Telemundo in Los Angeles, were presented with "Lifetime Achievement Awards.

"The awards were presented at the Universal Hilton Hotel as part of ceremonies honoring the best in radio, television, and internet broadcast journalism in Southern California.

José Ronstadt is a longtime television news anchor—and household name in Spanish-language broadcasting. His career includes long stints at KVEA-TV, KWHY-TV and KMEX-TV. Ronstadt has produced and hosted a number of internationally broadcast news, sports and entertainment shows and specials. In addition to his storied career in news, Ronstadt is well-known for his community involvement. He’s also heavily involved in the world of mariachi music and is a member of the International Mariachi Hall of Fame.

KPPC Public Radio records EPPS Pres. Henri Bollinger's comments about long time publicist Ronnie Chasen who was gunned down this week in Beverly Hills, CA.

Hollywood, CA - “She was a tough lady, but will always be remembered as one who was very protective of her clients as we should be,” said EPPS President Henri Bollinger, who had talked to the slain Publicist Ronni Chasen the day before she was gunned down in Beverly Hill, Ca. The Publicist was driving home on Sunset Blvd. from an after party and the premiere of Cher’s new movie “Burlesque”

Detectives believe it was a deliberate hit, when they discovered the publicist in her black Mercedes sedan, which had crashed into a light pole. Chasen had suffered five gunshot wounds to the chest.

“I was so traumatized that I realized that I was still only worried about an answer on a project, when a friend called and told me of her tragedy,” said Bollinger.

“It was then that I realized that we need to live for the day, and you can not always be concerned over what you believe is important or a benefit to me. It took the better part of the day to reconcile,” he said.

Bollinger offered a moment of silence at the LA Times Entertainment editors workshop after

his opening remarks at the ICG Local 600 Union Auditorium, Hollywood, CA.
